Tle Station World Manager - Together with Baader Planetarium, Planewave and Andor, the Swedish Space Cooperation (SSC) SSC has developed a ground station for satellite tracking over the past 1.5 years. A few days ago, the first successful test was conducted at the Baader Planetarium.

The development is part of SSC's Space Situational Awareness (SSA) program and aims to contribute to safer and more reliable use of space near Earth as the number of objects continues to grow at a rapid pace. The purpose of the tests was to ensure the station's maximum efficiency in producing high-quality SSA data by integrating high-quality discrete components.

The 3.5-meter Allski Dome from the Baader Planetarium was chosen as the protective structure. This dome structure is designed for space and satellite applications and allows for full opening and therefore a general view of the sky w/o moving parts and therefore less wear and tear. For the planned installation site in Australia, this is an excellent construction for atmospheric conditions and allows the telescope to continuously track satellites in very low orbits. It is also possible to observe so-called "space debris", i.e. pieces of unmanned rockets, satellite debris or disused satellites that pose a threat to space travel.

The larger the telescope and the more sensitive the camera, the more visible satellites or debris in orbit beyond Earth. Optically adapted to the requirements of the SSC, the station's large Planewave telescope, together with the Andor camera, allows it to record very faint rays of sunlight from satellites. Because of the speed at which these components are mounted on the Planewave L-mount, even small objects in low Earth orbit can be scanned in large numbers overnight. In order for this combination of technology from different manufacturers to work harmoniously, the control software for the individual components must have a common structure developed by SSC programmers.

It was tested during the test run at the Baader Planetarium, where everything actually worked as planned, or where the complex mechanical/technical integration took place. Before that, four people from SSC, led by program manager Jacob Ask, spent a week at the Mammendorf plant.

The vault was checked in on the first day, a very quick and easy procedure. It worked great and was compatible with the SSC software used by IT to control the dome segments.

With Wednesday's single night approaching, there was time pressure to connect at least the basic components (mount and camera) to a powerful server that was pre-planned and high-performance by SSC. Two hours after the system first left the integration hall, the first photons from the star were recorded on the camera's large sensor, which allowed the camera to focus. It has already been noted that all adjustments and optics are fine. As the darkness increased, more stars appeared and a process known as tuning began. the telescope takes pictures of different areas of the sky, analyzes star patterns, and software uses this to compensate for the sky's orientation and Earth's rotation. The procedure was completed within an hour and the star images were as expected. Encouraged by this rapid success, the orbital elements of the transiting satellite were subsequently introduced as TLEs. The SSC software calculated the motion, sent the data to a satellite tracker, and the Andor camera captured the images. The satellite appeared as a clean trailing point from the first image, with stars in the background streaked by the motion of Mount L toward the satellite. After that, more satellites were tracked and the result was always the same.

We are very satisfied with these tests. Through the combination of great ideas and products, innovative code, and reliable and visionary partners, this SSA station will soon be operational for a safer Earth orbit, says Jacob Ask, SSC's SSA Program Director.

None of the participants from the SSC and Baader Planetarium teams expected such a rapid success, and after three hours the tests were already completed and the FAT was successful. In recent days, the SSC software programming has been cleaned up before the device can be reassembled and prepared for shipment to Australia. Thanks to great ideas and products, innovative code, and reliable and visionary partners, this SSA station plan was born and will soon be operating in a safer Earth orbit.

The research infrastructure is being built at SSK's new satellite tracking station at the Western Australia Space Centre, 400 km north-east of Perth. The station's large Planewave Telescope and high-speed Andor camera allow satellites to record very faint reflections of sunlight, allowing the detection of many small objects in orbit overnight.

The Baader Planetarium's 3.5m Allski Dome works very well with the atmospheric conditions at our planned installation site in Australia. According to Jacob Ask, SSC program director, the infrastructure telescope enables continuous tracking of satellites and space debris.

Michael Risch has been interested in astronomy and space ever since he saw the last moon landing as a child. In 1981 he became a member of the Association of Amateur Astronomers in the Saarland and oversaw the establishment of the Pieterberg Observatory as a board member. As the founder and first webmaster of www.astronomy.de, he contributed many opinions and reports on astronomy and space topics to the first German astronomy portal. He was busy shooting planets, moon, sun, deep sky and TWAN style images and traveled long distances including a total of 7 days of eclipses. As a longtime science editor, Northern Lights and Stars traveled to the Arctic Circle. Michael has published many of his photographs and articles in professional magazines and has written chapters for the books Fotoschule (Photo School) and Extremfotografie (Extreme Photography) with his colleague Martin Rietze for Color Photography.
